| Welcome to the Superconducting Particle Accelerator
Forum of the Americas (SPAFOA), formerly the Linear Collider Forum of
America (LCFOA) site.
The
not-for-profit SPAFOA expands the scope of the former LCFOA to include
other major particle accelerator projects in addition to the

MEETING AT THE FACILITY FOR RARE ISOTOPE BEAMS (FRIB), MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY, OCTOBER 18, 2011
The forum held a membership meeting at FRIB on Oct. 18. FRIB is a major
new facility under construction on the campus of MSU that will provide
intense beams of rare isotopes (short-lived nuclei not normally found on
earth). FRIB will provide a user facility to enable scientists to make
discoveries about the properties of these rare isotopes in order to
better understand the physics of nuclei, nuclear astrophysics,
fundamental interactions, and applications for society. The project is
scheduled for completion in 2018 at an estimated cost of $600M.
The meeting was attended by 25 persons representing 12 SPAFOA member companies. The morning session included briefings from MSU FRIB senior personnel covering FRIB mission and schedule, cavity performance, cryomodule assemblies, cryoplant, and MSU procurement policies and procedures. The afternoon session included breakout sessions with FRIB and SPAFOA companies discussing the areas covered in the AM in more detail. A site tour of the facility was conducted in the PM hosted by Dr. Konrad Gelbke, FRIB laboratory director. The agenda and talks are posted here.
Capitol Hill Briefing - September 14, 2011
The Forum held a Capitol Hill briefing on Sept 14 in Room 2325, Rayburn House Office Building. The overall theme was:
"The Nation must continue strong support of superconducting radio frequency (SCRF) particle accelerator R&D to advance scientific discoveries and establish a strong U.S. Industrial base to support other governmental and global commercial applications."
The briefing was well attended by a total of 42 persons including 12 member companies, National Labs., speakers and representatives from several congressional members and committee offices. The final agenda provides a list of topics and speakers at the briefing. Copies of the presentations can be accessed by clicking on the talk in the agenda.
SPAFOA Meeting at Brookhaven Lab - April 27, 2011

The forum held its first members' meeting for 2011 at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Wed. April 27. The meeting was attended by eight member companies plus three who joined via the web meeting link. The group was welcomed by Sam Aronson, the lab director. An update of the SPAFOA activities, past and future, was presented by Ken Olsen. Senior level Brookhaven researchers then briefed the group on four lab research programs: eRHIC; ERL, SRF, and crab Cavities; LHC and HTS magnets; and NSLS II. Mike Harrison, the Americas Regional Team Leader for ILC, then updated the group on the progress and upcoming milestones for the program. After the lunch break, Don Rawlings, Director BNL Procurement, reviewed the lab's contract policies and procedures and Tony Favale lead a discussion of industry issues on Government funded accelerator projects. At the conclusion of the meeting the lab took us on a tour of the facilities supporting these major research programs where we got the opportunity to have hands on discussions with the researchers. The agenda and links to the talks can be found here. |
